Wow! What a couple of convoluted ways to approach basic math problems. I always thought the schools wanted to encourage parents to help kids with their homework. This will just confuse the kids and the parents. I wonder what books my county uses. Hmmm.

I have seen this confusion in action--my nieces (who are both incredibly bright and in all honors classes) would come to us adults in tears trying to figure these things out--pity, they were actually logical which is a hinderence in this kind of math. I have heard that they are going back to the standard way of teaching math, because this way is dumb, and because the parents couldn't help the kids with their homework. My sister and brother-in-law actually had to attend seminars held by the school at night which were designed to re-teach the parents how to do the math they already knew how to do, but in their convoluted way. God help us all!! And yes, I am seriously considering home-schooling, too!

When I want to do quick math in my head, I employ that first method mentioned: 15x22 becomes (15X20) + (15*2) which becomes 300+30=330. BUT: I can only do that because I learned the traditional algorithm the way it should be done. And if I do it on paper, it's ALWAYS done the traditional way. I can't even begin to comprehend that matrix method! Holy cow! That looks like more work than any other! So the question, then, is: What the heck were they smoking when they came up with that? And whose brother-in-law works for the department of education that's buying this crap????

I had to stop watching. My brain was starting to leak out of my ears.
